Recommended Security Software
A collection of progams that I endorse (in alphabetical order).
Notes:
- Free solutions typically lack some functionality. The recommended option would be to purchase subscription for an internet security suite.
- I don’t endorse Norton 360, Norton Internet Security or Trend Micro PCCillin because of their reputation of adversely affecting computer performance – perceived or otherwise.
Update: The latest versions of the Norton security products are MUCH improved. They have outstanding detection rates and don’t slow the PC down significantly at all. - I recommend Kaspersky Internet Security because their anti-virus consistently rates among top performers across various independent reviews and constantly attracts high praise.

Damned glad you have spoken out againct Trend and Norton – what pains they are these days. May have been OK in some versions in earier times but not great now IMHO
I like AVIRA Pro ($40) – user friendly, unobtrusive, no performance issues that I have noticed

Yeah – I encounter too many different problems with them these days to be able to say nice things about them. I’m sure in your position you see the same sorts of issues. Nevertheless, they’re still better than nothing.
AVIRA (Pro) is definitely one of the better ones out there. As you say, low overheads and comparatively great detection rates.
